Mercedes C-Class Premium vs Premium Plus: what changes between W205 and W206?

Premium Plus did not mean the same equipment throughout the C-Class’s life. These dated UK examples show why generation, production period and individual specification matter.

Premium Plus sits above Premium in the relevant Mercedes C-Class UK range, but there is no single equipment list that covers every W205 and W206. The package structure changed between generations and within production runs. Check a dated UK brochure and the individual car's factory record before assuming that a sunroof, Burmester audio or a particular assistance system is included.

The comparison below uses two historical snapshots: an early W205 UK price list and the W206 brochure effective from January 2022 production. These illustrate the differences without pretending to cover every edition, body style or later specification revision. W205 and W206 refer here to the Saloon generations; the corresponding Estates are S205 and S206.

Early W205: Premium added comfort, Premium Plus added more technology

In the Mercedes-Benz UK C-Class Saloon price list effective 1 April 2014, page 21, Premium grouped a panoramic roof, front-seat memory, ambient lighting and the Keyless-Go Comfort package. Premium Plus added Burmester surround sound and COMAND Online. In that price list, both packages were offered on Sport and AMG Line with automatic transmission.

That is a useful reference for an early W205. It is not a safe checklist for every facelift W205, an AMG model or a later car simply because “Premium Plus” appears in the advert.

W206: a different allocation of equipment

The Mercedes-Benz UK brochure effective January 2022, preserved by a third-party archive, lists DIGITAL LIGHT, keyless comfort access, seat memory, augmented-reality navigation and a 360-degree parking camera package among AMG Line Premium's highlights.

Its Premium Plus highlights add a panoramic sliding roof, head-up display, four-zone climate control and different wheel and trim details. Burmester is not listed among those Premium Plus additions. Those are January 2022 brochure examples, not a guarantee for every W206 registered in 2022.

The comparison that catches buyers out

An early W205 buyer might reasonably associate Premium with a panoramic roof. Applying that expectation to the W206 snapshot above would be a mistake: the roof appears in the higher equipment line's additions. Likewise, carrying an early Premium Plus audio expectation across generations can produce an incorrect shortlist.

The lesson is to compare the feature you want, not just the tier name. Write “panoramic opening roof” or “factory upgraded audio” in your notes, then ask the seller to establish that item on the specific car.

Does Premium Plus guarantee DISTRONIC?

No universal rule follows from the Premium Plus name. Driver assistance has its own package structure. The January 2022 UK brochure lists Driving Assistance package Plus separately, including Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, with its own eligibility conditions. Availability to order is different from inclusion in every car.

If adaptive cruise control is essential, ask for explicit evidence of that function. “Cruise control”, “lane assist” and “Premium Plus” should not be substituted for a clear answer.

How to check the C-Class you are considering

1. Identify the generation and body style

Ask for the full VIN and available production details. Registration dates can overlap generation changes, and a Coupe or Cabriolet needs its own documentation rather than a Saloon specification list.

2. Find a brochure that matches the production period

Look at the date printed inside the document, not the year a search engine says the PDF was uploaded. Archived brochures are particularly useful, but confirm that the source document is the manufacturer's UK publication.

3. Read the individual factory record

A Mercedes-Benz build-sheet report can help establish recorded original equipment where available. Our datacard guide explains how to read identity, package and individual equipment entries together.

4. Check the features in person

Ask the seller to show the roof operation, seat-memory controls, camera views, head-up display and audio settings relevant to the claim. Check the actual equipment rather than assuming a visible trim element establishes a whole package.

5. Resolve omissions before agreeing the deal

If a promised feature is absent, ask whether the advert is wrong, the car had a production-specific change or the equipment has been altered. Keep the answer and any supporting paperwork with your purchase notes.

Which version is worth choosing?

Start with how you use the car. A head-up display may matter more to one driver than an opening roof; another may prioritise parking visibility or seat adjustment. Once the individual equipment is established, compare condition, maintenance evidence and asking price.

A higher original equipment tier does not cancel out wear or missing maintenance. Our guide to verifying service-history claims covers that separate part of the buying process.

Quick answers

Does every Premium Plus C-Class have Burmester?

Do not assume so. Audio provision varies with generation and production specification. Check the audio entry for the individual vehicle.

Does Premium always include a panoramic roof?

No. The two dated UK examples above allocate the roof differently. Use the correct production-period brochure.

Can I use a US or Canadian package guide for a UK car?

Not as proof of its specification. Similar package names can describe different equipment in different markets.

For a useful final comparison, list the features that each car demonstrably has. “Premium” and “Premium Plus” then become context, rather than substitutes for evidence.
