How EV charging cost and time are estimated
The calculator finds the energy added between your starting and target charge levels. It allows for charging losses, uses the lower of the charger and vehicle power limits, and applies either one electricity rate or a peak/off-peak blend.
Home, split-tariff and public charging
For home charging, enter the rate that applies while the car charges or use the split-tariff option to blend peak and off-peak energy. For public charging, enter the operator’s price per kWh and add any known connection, parking or session fee. Household standing charges are not allocated to the car.
Understanding the time result
Dividing energy by the lower of the charger and vehicle power limits gives an idealised time. Your car’s charging curve, battery temperature and other users sharing a supply can all make the real session longer.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use total or usable battery capacity?
Use usable battery capacity where it is available. Manufacturers sometimes quote a larger gross capacity that includes a protective buffer unavailable to the driver.
Why include charging losses?
Some electricity is lost as heat and through vehicle systems before it reaches the battery. A planning allowance helps avoid understating the energy billed by the charger.
Will a 150 kW charger charge at 150 kW throughout?
Usually not. The car controls its maximum charging rate and charging typically slows as the battery fills, especially near a high state of charge.
How does the peak and off-peak tariff option work?
Enter both rates and estimate the percentage of charging billed off peak. The calculator creates a blended rate for the session; check your tariff because cheap windows and smart-charging rules vary.
What is included in the monthly and annual cost?
The projection multiplies one estimated session, including any fixed session fee you enter, by the number of sessions per month. Household standing charges are not included.
